Recert Digest: Children with Special Healthcare Needs Series [April 2019, Part 2]

Posted by Recert on Apr 18, 2019 11:37:02 AM

Recert Continues to Grow: Explore the Children with Special Healthcare Needs Series

Recert_AutismSpectrum_2Our Recert team is pleased to announce the availability of two new courses in our Children with Special Healthcare Needs series. These additions round out a 4-course series focused on providing this special patient population with the best prehospital care.

Learn more about these unique courses!

Children with Special Healthcare Needs: Special Technology Devices (ALS/BLS Edition)

Recert_SpecialTechnologiesNew and improved technologies and life-sustaining devices have led to significant changes in the care of patients with chronic illnesses. Advances in medical care have led to the discharge of children who previously would not have survived. For example, children who are born extremely premature or with significant medical conditions are increasingly able to survive and thrive with the aid of medical advances and technologies.

Children assisted by or dependent on technology are a subgroup of children with special health care needs. These children with special health care needs rely on medical devices for their survival. When emergency medical services, or EMS, responds to children with special technology devices, the prehospital professional must anticipate evaluating and managing any devices the child may have. Some of these devices are easily visible, and some are not. Regardless, as a prehospital provider, you will need to consider the pediatric patients’ medical technology during your field assessment and management.

Children with Special Healthcare Needs: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ALS/BLS Edition)

Recert_AutismSpectrumIt is likely that a prehospital professional will encounter children with autism. It is therefore important to recognize when a child may have autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, and how to act accordingly.

Children with ASD may have difficulty maintaining conversations, understanding and maintaining social relationships, and recognizing nonverbal social cues and interactions. They may exhibit restricted and repetitive behaviors which may include any of the following: repetitive motor movements, speech, or use of objects; insisting on the same routine or rituals; restricted or fixated interest in an object or activity; or an unusual reaction to sensory input, ranging from excessive reaction to indifference.

Children with Special Health Care Needs: Asthma Emergencies (BLS/ALS Edition)

Recert_AsthmaAsthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood, affecting almost five million children in the United States. Half of all pediatric asthma deaths occur in the out-of-hospital setting. Half of all children who die from asthma suffer a final exacerbation of less than two hours, and some children die within the first hour of the fatal episode.

Children With Special Health Care Needs: Diabetes Emergencies (BLS/ALS Edition)

Recert_DiabetesDiabetes is a common chronic disorder in children. As a prehospital care provider, you will undoubtedly be called upon many times a year to assist children with medical issues related to diabetes. This disease requires a blend of self-care and medical care. Parents, schools, communities, and the health care team must work collaboratively to provide information and training to ensure proper management of the disease.

Recert Continues to Grow: All-New Game-Based Courses Available Now!

Our Recert team is pleased to announce the availability of two new game-based courses focused on cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. Practitioners who successfully complete either of these courses are eligible for one hour of continuing education through CAPCE!

Learn more about these unique courses:

Cardiovascular Disorders: Game-Based Lesson (BLS/ALS Edition)

Cardiovascular3Heart and blood vessel diseases or cardiovascular disorders are the leading cause of death globally.

Cardiovascular2This course discusses the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of patients presenting with chest discomfort and describes the process for applying the Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) Assessment Pathway to assess patients swiftly. It also describes the ongoing assessment process to rule out or confirm potential diagnoses, and adapting treatment and management based on patient response and findings.

Respiratory Disorders: Game-Based Module (BLS/ALS Edition)

Respiratory1Treatment of shortness of breath can often be challenging given the difficulty in determining the etiology of a patient’s symptoms. EMS practitioners must therefore focus on those therapies proven to benefit the patient.

Respiratory2This module reviews the anatomy and physiology of the airway and ventilation and differentiates between respiratory distress and failure. Additionally, it presents two different respiratory distress case studies in which the AMLS Assessment Pathway is used to manage patients who are short of breath.

All-New Functionality Makes it Easier for Employers and Employees to Apply Completed Recert Course Hours towards Certification

9781284165005_WEBx_MasDecon_400x200

Each day, we're making it easier for employees to maintain their continuing education records and for employers to track their employees' progress.

Our Recert team is pleased to announce some exciting new features that make it easier for employers and employees to apply completed Recert course hours to their certification models:

  1. All existing Recert employees now have the option to grant their employer the ability to apply course hours on their behalf.

When an existing Recert employee views the "Edit Certification" page, they now see an option to "Allow my employer to apply hours on my behalf.” By checking this box, the employee grants their employer the ability to apply course hours on their behalf.

Note: By default, the option is unchecked for existing Employer ID(s). There is an information tip next to the checkbox to ensure employees fully understand the options.

  2. When an employee adds a new  Employer ID to a certification, the "Allow my employer to apply hours on my behalf" checkbox is selected by default.

Note: The employee receives a confirmation message when adding a new Employer ID.

  3. Once an employee has associated their certification with the Employer ID and granted their employer the ability to act on their behalf, the employer is able to apply and unapply hours for completed Recert courses.

Note: The drop-down menu that allows employers to select an employee is filtered by the Certificate ID.

  4. Employees are able to review where their course hours were applied against the certification model by clicking on the information tip next to "Applied Hours" in the "Completed Recert Courses" tab.

Note: As an employer, the same functionality is found on the "Apply Employee Hours" tab for selected employees.

Did You Know?

Each day, we're making it easier for employees to maintain their continuing education records and for employers to track their employees' progress. Here are two all-new platform enhancements that continue these efforts:

  1. Employers are now able to filter their employees' progress.
With new filtering capabilities, employers can choose to filter the progress of their employees by expiration date or completion percentage.

    recert_employerfilter-1-276041-edited.png

  2. Employees are now able to upload and store non-Recert continuing education documentation.
Keeping a complete and accurate track of continuing education progress is not an easy task! That's why Recert allows employees to upload and store documentation for continuing education that they take on their own (outside of Recert).
